The Maiden’s Tower, the centrepiece of this artwork, is an ancient and important symbol of Istanbul, also known as the city on top of seven hills (Turkish: Yedi tepeli şehir), as it was built on seven hills. The Maiden Tower, which has become a symbol of Istanbul, has been placed on seven large and three small rocks.
The seven large rocks represent the establishment of the ancient city on seven hills, while the three small rocks represent Istanbul’s three most important settlements, known as ‘bilâd-ı selâse’ (the three towns), which include Üsküdar, where the Maiden’s Tower is located, Galata and Eyüp. With birds flying out of the stage and koi fish eager to embark on various adventures, miniature artist Berna Vahapoğlu intended to reflect the city’s restless movement in her work.
Berna used the Modern Miniature Technique.
