Spring (Illumination & Calligraphy)

The Spring is the original calligraphy and illumination traditional Turkish and Islamic artwork. Alif is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. It is regarded as the most important letter for many reasons. In sufism, Alif symbolises selfness of Allah and his unity.

Initially, the calligrapher (Sahof Almustafa) wrote this inscription of Alif on the cardboard and the illuminator, Gulcan Acar, has uniquely designed and applied this harmonious and coherent illumination art. In the original artwork, real gold is used for the yellow parts you see here.

Description

The Spring is an original work of traditional Turkish calligraphy and illumination inspired by the symbolic meaning of the letter Alif, the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. In Sufi thought, Alif represents the oneness and unity of Allah, standing upright as a symbol of divine singularity and spiritual alignment.

In this composition, the Alif is enriched with delicate flowers and flowing leaves, transforming the letter into a living form. The floral elements evoke renewal, creation, and the continuous blossoming of the soul, while the leaves suggest movement, growth, and the cycle of life. Emerging from a single sacred form, they reflect the idea that multiplicity and beauty originate from divine unity.

Through the language of traditional illumination, The Spring invites the viewer to contemplate harmony between nature, spirituality, and the timeless aesthetic of Turkish–Islamic arts.
